Russian Dolls are a quintessential part of Russian traditional handicrafts. It is thought the first Russian Doll or Matryoshka doll dates from 1890 and was based on the traditional Japanese nesting dolls or possibly a Faberge egg from 1885 which consisted of a nesting egg, yolk, hen and crown.
